Fragment of 12 inch High Explosive shell : Battleship Hill, Gallipoli
Part of the base of a High Explosive naval shell case, including the primer.
This piece of shell was found at Battleship Hill, Gallipoli, on 28 February 1919 by members of the Australian Historical Mission (AHM). The AHM, led by Official Historian C E W Bean, visited Gallipoli from February to March 1919 to collect items for the nation, to record the area through artworks and photographs, and to explore the battlefields to answer some of the 'riddles of Anzac' for the Australian official history of the war.
Originally called Big 700, the hill became known as Battleship Hill due to the bombardments the area received from British Royal Navy ships, intended to disrupt Turkish advances or to shell men in reserve who sheltered behind the inland slope.
