Description
On patrol during Operation Atherton, a section of 1 Platoon, A Company, 8RAR, stops for a rest or to bivouac for the night. The soldiers in the foreground are, left to right: unknown; possibly 3794423 Private (Pte) Raymond John Asmus; 2790913 Pte Graeme Colin Piltz, the platoon signaller, who is carrying a field radio on his back; unknown. In the background, three other members of the platoon are lying in an ambush position with an M60 machinegun and an L1A1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR) pointing down a bush track in case any enemy happen along it. Operation Atherton, the battalion's first in Vietnam, is a reconnaissance and ambush operation in the northwest of the province.
