Field message book: Sergeant Albert David Lowerson, VC, 21st Battalion, AIF
Field message book with removeable brown fabric cover, carried by Sergeant Albert David Lowerson, with a bullet hole through the centre. Inside the cover is Lowerson's signature 'A B Lowerson VC'. The book contains a roll for 10 Platoon, 21st Battalion, including their five Lewis gunners: 50037 Pte H Campbell, 6413 Pte A Gilmore, 7089 Pte E E Taylor, 7270 Pte M E Kaye, 4152 Pte A J K Laws, 6890 Pte R A Shaw, 5592 Cpl Elliot J.F. [Lewis gunner], 736 L/Cpl W Spong [Lewis gunner], 6924 Pte H Hutchins [Lewis gunner], 445 Pte R Knight [Lewis gunner] and 5829 Pte W G Evans [Lewis gunner].
Sergeant Albert David Lowerson earned the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Mont St. Quentin on 1 September 1918 for his endurance, bravery and tactical skill. A bullet passed through this book and wounded Lowerson in the thigh, but he refused to leave the line until the captured position had been consolidated.
