History / Summary

During the First World War the Ottoman Turkish Army had significant issues with the maintaining supply of its forces across an immense empire fighting on numerous fronts, including against Australian troops in their own country on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915, and later in the Sinai Peninsula and Palestine from 1916 to 1918. Their troops were armed and equipped with a range of local Ottoman and imported German items such as webbing, bread bags, Mauser rifles, aircraft and field artillery. This particular Turkish ration bag is an example of a locally sourced Ottoman bread bag and it was collected by the Australian War Records Section during the First World War. It has been decorated in a tradition methods by its now unknown original user.
