Description

Collection relating to the Second World War experiences of Patrick Joseph Lynagh, Sandgate, Queensland, 1939-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 consists of six diaries written throughout the course of the Second World War. Lynagh records events as he hears them from various sources, including radio news as well as personal informants, many of whom are likely to have stayed at the boarding house he owned and managed. Lynagh records events such as the German occupation of Poland, the United States' supply of materiel to the Allied forces, and a descriptive second-hand account of the Battle of the River Plate. Additionally, he comments on news from the Eastern Front, remarking on the the siege of Leningrad, as well as the bombing of Darwin, Broome, and Townsville, and other events in the Pacific Theatre. He relates events to the service personnel he knows, most frequently his son-in-law Captain William Alfred Peake (QX45277). Additionally, he frequently records the deaths of significant persons, especially national politicians.
