Description

Battalion Padre Father John "Tink" Tinkler holding a church service on the verandah of an old abandoned French villa, which was seriously bombed out, on Operation Nowra, 8 August - 6 September. The soldiers are sitting on empty jerry cans as the mud was so deep that they were starting to sink like quicksand. They all appear to be members of 8 Platoon, C Company. Identified at the very front of the congregation is 2786763 Private Philip Brian "Phil" Pegler and beside him is 311557 Lieutenant Joseph James "Jock" Smith MC and Bar. Behind Pegler is 2787228 Private Ross David Brogan and beside him is Private Jim "Budda" McDonald. The other men are unidentified.
