Oil Bottle Cap : Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No 3* Rifle
Description
Small brass screw cap. The upper third has a domed top with the stamped inscription, 'V', '23085' and the side has numerous vertical grooves. The lower two thirds is solid brass with a right hand thread cut into its side. Attached to the bottom center of the cap is a short thin rusted steel projection.
History / Summary
The type of oil bottle to which this cap belonged was used in the Australian service rifle before and during the Gallipoli campaign, the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No. 3*. The oil bottle together with the barrel pull-through were stored in the rifle's shoulder stock.
