Studio portrait of Major (Maj) Donald Duncan Buchanan, 13th Light Horse. Maj Buchanan enlisted at Haberfield NSW, aged 40, on 1 May 1915 and embarked from Port Melbourne aboard HMAT A34 Persic on 28 May 1915. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and on the Western Front where he was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre for distinguished service. He returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in 1920. Maj Buchanan had previously served as a Lieutenant with the 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmens Contingent in South Africa during the Boer War.
