Studio portrait of 2890 Private (Pte) Arthur Henry Phillip Newson,13th Battalion, of Leichhardt, NSW. Employed as an apprentice fitter and turner, Bdr Newson enlisted in August 1915 at the age of 17 years and 7 months. According to his Roll of Honour circular filled out by his father, Pte Newson "gave his age as 21 as he was eager to enlist", and left Australia for Egypt with the 13th Battalion in September 1915. Pte Newson transferred to the 34th Battery of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade in March 1916, was promoted from Gunner to Bombardier (Bdr) in January 1918, and spent the remainder of the war on the Western Front. Wounded twice during his service career, Bdr Newson returned to Australia in February 1919, but drowned two months later on 18 April 1919 at Borah Creek, near Bingara, NSW, aged 21.
