[Battle scene in city]
Description
Depicts an imaginative and stylised battle against the backdrop of an industrial city. Numerous tanks swarm the foreground of the work as they move over rubble created by the fighting. Industrial chimneys emit dark plumes of smoke into the air, creating a sombre atmosphere. The artist was a POW in Oflag 7B camp until its liberation in April 1945. While waiting for the approaching release, he may have created this work from what he imagined was occurring during the last months of the Second World War.
