Studio portrait of 817 Private (Pte) William Stanley Allars, 39th Battalion, of Clyde, Vic. A farm labourer before enlisting with his elder brother 816 Pte Sydney George Allars in January 1916, William Allars left Australia for France with the original 39th Battalion in May 1916. He was mortally wounded by a German shell at Ploegsteert Wood in Belgium on 30 April 1917, and died two days later at the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul, age 21 years.
