Studio portrait of 177 Private (Pte) Philip Claude Smith, 36th Battalion. An engine driver of Penshurst, NSW, he embarked with A Company on HMAT Beltana (A72) on 13 May 1916. He later transferred to the 53rd Battalion. He died of wounds on 28 October 1916 and is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery Mericourt-L'Abbe, France .
