Perspex souvenir with inset gold coloured RAAF insignia of an eagle in flight under the Imperial crown. The back of the pendant has been painted blue.
History / Summary
Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Perspex souvenir made by Leading Aircraftman Sydney Edward Darkin during the Second World War. Darkin was born at Port Pirie, South Australia on 3 July 1913, the son of Benjamin John Darkin and Rosena Rowlins. In 1935 he married Grace Florence Reynolds and had two children, Dawn Rose Mabel and Janet Margaret. Before he enlisted into the RAAF on 7 September 1943 he had worked for 12 months in a garage and at the time of enlistment was employed as an assistant shunter with the South Australian Railways. Darkin served within Australia throughout the war. On enlistment he held the rank of Aircraftman 1. He was promoted to Flight Mechanic in May 1944 and to Leading Aircraftman in August 1944. Darkin was discharged on 11 January 1946.
