Composite studio portrait of the Metcalfe family parents Mary Ann and Abner and their sons. Identified from left to right are: Percival Metcalfe who enlisted but had a heart condition that meant he did not serve overseas; 3877 Private (Pte) Robert George Metcalfe, 19th Battalion, aged 22; Mary Ann Metcalfe; 149 Pte Abner Woodhall Metcalfe, 35th Battalion, aged 45; 3088 Pte Joseph Charles Usher Metcalfe, 13th Battalion, aged 24; 1781 Pte John William Metcalfe, 13th Battalion, aged 25 and 3087 Abner Metcalfe junior, 13th Battalion, aged 20. The father and sons all enlisted in the First AIF. Pte Joseph Charles Usher Metcalfe was reported missing on 29 August 1916 and subsequently died whilst a Prisoner of War on 30 August 1916. Robert was the only son that married on his return, the others were too affected by the war to live a normal life.
