Description
Studio portrait of 1606 Private (Pte) Patrick Edward Ryan, 30th Battalion, of Waverley, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting on 15 July 1915, Pte Ryan embarked from Sydney on HMAT Beltana (A72) with the 1st Reinforcements on 9 November 1915. On 20 July 1916, Pte Ryan was killed in action at Fleurbaix, at the age of 28. He was last seen late on 19 July suffering from concussion after being hit by a bullet fired by a sniper. He has no known grave. On the anniversary of his death in 1920, his siblings inserted an 'In Memoriam' notice in the Sydney Morning Herald "The war is really over/ To some those words sound nice/ But oh the sad, sad hearts of those/ Whose loved ones paid the price".
