Studio portrait of 2900 Private (Pte) William Royan, 26th Battalion, of Bundaberg, Qld. Formerly a labourer, Pte Royan enlisted on 14 April 1915 and embarked from Brisbane. However, due to illness he disembarked at Sydney to recover. As a member of the 9th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, he embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Argyllshire (A8) on 30 September 1915. He served later with the 53rd Battalion in France, where he was killed in action at Fromelles on 19 July 1916, aged 25.
