Studio portrait of 5974 Private (Pte) Ray Joseph de Groot, 22nd Battalion, of Kyneton, Vic. A farmer before enlisting on 2 July 1915, Pte de Groot embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 2 October 1916 with the 16th Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 4 October 1918 near St Quentin, at the age of 21.
