Group portrait of a group of Australian soldiers, mainly from the 2nd Division. Back row, left to right: a soldier identified as Shaw, 15th Field Ambulance; an unidentified soldier from the 21st Battalion; and 5974 Private (Pte) Ray Joseph de Groot, 22nd Battalion, of Kyneton, Vic. Front row, left to right: 5842 Pte Frederick Leonard Gilder, 21st Battalion, of St Kilda, Vic; and 5792 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) (later Corporal (Cpl)) Albert William Davis, 22nd Battalion, of Rutherglen, Vic. Pte de Groot, who was a farmer before enlisting on 2 July 1915, and L Cpl Davis, who was a coach builder before enlisting on 25 April 1916, both embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 2 October 1916 with the 16th Reinforcements. Pte de Groot was killed in action on 4 October 1918 near St Quentin, at the age of 21. Cpl Davis died of wounds on 21 May 1918 in France. Pte Gilder returned to Australia on 22 September 1919.
