Portrait of a group of men from the 3rd Reinforcements, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, at Seymour camp. ...
Portrait of a group of men from the 3rd Reinforcements, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, at Seymour camp. Included in the photograph is 2293 Private (Pte) Tom Davidson. A labourer before enlisting on 9 May 1916, Pte Davidson returned to Australia on 6 September 1919. A soldier, probably 2261 Private (Pte) Albert Ernest Bailey, who served with South African Light Horse during the Boer War, and for five years with the Transvaal Volunteers, is shaking hands with an officer, probably Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Percy Norwood. Pte Bailey became medically unfit and returned to Australia on 8 March 1917. An electrical engineer before enlisting on 1 March 1916, 2nd Lt Norwood transferred to the Australian Flying Corps on 27 October 1917. He resigned his appointment in the AIF in London on 17 April 1920, having been appointed a representative of Dick, Kerr and Co, an electrical engineering company. An unidentified soldier is holding a monkey on a chain, probably an animal mascot for the unit. The 3rd Reinforcements embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Karroo (A10) on 18 September 1916.
