Studio portrait of 413748 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Patrick John Edwards, 466 Squadron, RAAF, originally of Cardiff, NSW. Flt Sgt Edwards was pilot and captain of Halifax HX273, one of sixteen of the squadron's aircraft which took off from RAF Leconfield on the night of 20/21 December 1943 to bomb Frankfurt, Germany. Halifax HX273 was attacked by a night fighter after Frankfurt had been hit. Six of the seven crew members escaped the burning plane and were taken prisoner of war by the German Home Guard on landing; Flt Sgt Edwards was killed when the plane crashed, and he is buried in the Hannover War Cemetery, Germany.
