Studio portrait of 290602 Flight Lieutenant (later Squadron Leader) John Leonard Scott, No 2 Squadron RAAF, of Rose Park, SA. He enlisted on 11 March 1940 and attended various training courses, qualifying as a pilot. He was promoted to Flying Officer in August 1940, Flight Lieutenant in July 1941, then Squadron Leader in December 1943. He went missing on an operational flight on 27 March 1944 and was taken prisoner of war (POW). An inquiry post war found that Squadron Leader Scott and four others reached Loeang island and were cared for by local people but then were captured by the Japanese. They were held at Barbar Island then Saumlaki in the Ambon area. Squadron Leader Scott, and Flight Sergeants King, Wallace and Wright were executed near Tan Toei whilst POWs on 16 August 1944.
