Studio portrait of 1072 Private James Norman Baker Loudon, 4th Field Ambulance who was a 22 year old clerk from North Unley, South Australia, when he enlisted on 14 September 1914. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Berrima. He was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 6 June 1915 but recovered to rejoin his unit at Gallipoli. On 29 April 1916 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to the 50th Battalion. He was again wounded in action in France on 7 June 1917 and later rejoined his unit. For his distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded a Military Cross (MC) and a Bar to the Military Cross. Lieutenant Loudon returned to Australia and his appointment was terminated on 13 July 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
