Studio portrait of 8431 Gunner Alec Stewart Paterson, 6th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) who was a 30 year old electrical engineer from East Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted on 3 September 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 18th Battery from Melbourne on 22 November 1915 aboard HMAT Persic. While serving in France with the 6th FAB, he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action near Pozieres on 7 August 1916. In April 1917 he transferred to the Australian Flying Corps and graduated as an observer with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in July 1917. He was severely wounded in action in France in May 1918 and evacuated to England and then returned to Australia on 1 February 1919 with the rank of Lieutenant. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
