West Australian HMAS Sydney Medalet : Leading Signalman J W Seabrook, HMAS Sydney
Description
Medalet featuring, on the obverse, an image of HMAS Sydney under sail above which are the words 'TO COMMEMMORATE THE VICTORY OVER THE EMDEN' and underneath 'HMAS SYDNEY / 9th Nov 1914'. The designer's initials (AW) appear immediately under the waves. On the reverse is a victory wreath, at the apex of which is a swan over the legend 'PRESENTED / BY THE PEOPLE OF / WESTERN AUSTRALIA TO / J.W. SEABROOK / SIGNALMAN'. Seabrook's name is engraved. The medal is provided with a suspension loop.
History / Summary
Presented to Leading Signalman John William Seabrook, a member of the Royal Navy on loan to the Royal Australian Navy. J W Seabrook was born in Essex, England in 1892. He joined the Sydney on 23 June 1913 when the ship was commissioned and served on her until November 1918. Seabrook was involved in the Sydney's engagement with the German raider SMS Emden on 9 November 1914 from which this medalet is awarded on behalf of the people of Western Australia.
