Description
Portrait of the Japanese aircrew near their Tachikawa Ki-54c (Hickory) aircraft that conveyed Lieutenant General Masao Baba, Supreme Commander of Japanese Forces in Borneo and Commander of the 37th Japanese Army to a surrender ceremony at the Headquarters of 9th Division on Labuan Island. A number of unidentified Australians from 1 Squadron, RAAF, are visible sitting under the wing of the aircraft. General Baba was later found guilty of war crimes in relation to the Sandakan Death March, sentenced to death and hanged at Rabaul on 7 August 1947.
