Studio portrait of 6571 Private (Pte) Harry Rogers Hill, 27th Battalion, of Clarence Park, SA, originally of Wiltshire, England. A coach builder prior to enlistment, Hill had served for three years with the Volunteer Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment and completed seven months Home Service in England, denoted by the stripes on the right sleeve of his uniform. Enlisting with the 1st AIF on 1 September 1916, he embarked with the 19th Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Miltiades on 24 January 1917. Later transferring to the 50th Battalion, Pte Hill was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917, aged 32. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Pte Hill was survived by three children, two of whom later served during the Second World War. 24227 Engine Room Artificer 4th Class Robert Henry Hill, died at sea when the HMAS Sydney was torpedoed and sunk on 19 November 1941. 407768 Flight Sergeant Ronald James Hill, No. 18 Squadron RAAF, was lost on operations over Darwin on 5 April 1943.
