Description

Studio portrait of 784 Driver (Dvr) John Noel Bonney, 10th Light Horse Regiment, of Perth, WA. A farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Fremantle aboard HMAT Itonus on 19 February 1915. Arriving at Gallipoli in May 1915, Dvr Bonney was wounded in the arm from an exploding shell in August and evacuated to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis, Egypt. Later serving as a driver and reinforcement to the 36th Company, Australian Army Service Corps, Dvr Bonney was admitted to a British hospital on 3 October 1918 suffering from malaria. He died on 18 October 1918, aged 26, and was buried at Damascus British War Cemetery, Syria.
