Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) John Stanley Piesse, 93rd (Derwent) Infantry Regiment, Citizens Military Forces (CMF), of Hobart, Tas. On his right breast Lt Piesse is wearing a ribbon of the Coronation Medal 1911. On 26 July 1916 Piesse enlisted in the 40th Battalion as a private. He embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Orsova on 6 December 1916. Although Private Piesse had held the rank of lieutenant in the CMF, and was temporarily promoted to acting sergeant major in the AIF, he was considered too young for a commission. On 13 October 1917 he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, aged 20. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, Belgium.
