Studio portrait of 1673 Private (Pte) John Parnell Darmody, 26th Battalion, of Walloon, Qld. A railway employee before enlisting in May 1915, Pte Darmody left Australia for Egypt with the 2nd Reinforcements in August 1915, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in March 1916. Pte Darmody was wounded in the legs and shoulder during the 7th Brigade's attack on Pozieres Heights on 5 August 1916 and was repatriated to the 1st South General Hospital in Birmingham, England, where he died of his wounds on the 24 August 1916, aged 25.
