Group portrait of 14 National Service Training Battalion (NSTB), comprising National Servicemen from Bairnsdale, Sale, and Traralgon. In the second row from front, centre, are three officers of the Royal Australian Artillery: an unidentified Corporal, unidentified Sergeant, and 41400 Second Lieutenant Peter John Badcock. Badcock, who had graduated from the Officer Cadet School at Portsea in 1952, was posted to 14 NSTB in 1953 and during 1955-1957, alternating with postings to 1 Field Regiment. In 1961 he changed his surname to Badcoe. He served in Malaya with 103 Field Battery from September 1961 to November 1963. In 1965, he transferred to the infantry and was promoted to provisional Major in June 1966. He served in Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) from 6 August 1966. He was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for his gallantry and leadership during a series of actions in February to April 1966 while serving as an operations adviser in Thua Thien province. During the last of these, on 7 April 1966, he was killed in action.
