Description

Studio portrait of WX11141 Major (Maj) John Godsell Foreman MC, 2/13 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). A native of Kalgoorlie, WA, Maj Foreman enlisted on 28 July 1941. In 1943 Maj Foreman was one of a number of AIF officers selected to serve with the British Army in the Middle East to secure battle experience. Arriving too late to take part in the North African campaigns, the men were attached to the British Seventh Armoured Division for the invasion of Italy. Following the landing at Salerno, Maj Foreman's unit, the 4th Field Squadron Royal Engineers, were responsible for constructing an assault bridge over the Volturno River. In recognition of Maj Foreman's 'great courage, fine example and excellent organisation' in successfully commanding the hazardous operation, he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) on 23 March 1944 by the British Army. Later rejoining the Australian forces in Tarakan, Borneo with the 2/13 Field Company RAE, Maj Foreman died of illness on 13 September 1945, aged 41, and was buried at Labuan War Cemetery, Malaya.
