Studio portrait of 4361 Private (Pte) Herbert Lee Barnes, 22nd Battalion, of West Melbourne, Victoria. A painter prior to enlistment on 19 January 1916, Pte Barnes embarked from Melbourne aboard RMS Orontes on 29 March 1916, with the 11th reinforcements. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in October 1917 and returned to Australia in May 1919.
