Description
Inserted into the border of the Shellal mosaic is the cross-section of a fish tail, a swastika and a fish head - fragments of the Shellal mosaic.
The Shellal mosaic floor of an old Byzantine Basilica or church built in the time of the Roman Emperor Justinian 1 about 561 A.D. which was discovered by the 2nd Australian light horse brigade at Shellal, on the Wady Ghuzze, in Palestine, on 1917-04-23. The paintings contained within McFarlane's sketch book were made onsite in 1917 and describe in detail the components of the Shellal mosaic.
