Peaked Cap : Lieutenant Colonel W Martin, Launceston Rifle Regiment
Senior infantry officers' peaked cap. Brown khaki wool body with rifle green cap band and 1900-1912 rising sun cap badge on the front. Black leather peak with a single gilt bullion band and a brown leather chinstrap with Australian Military Force side buttons. Within the cap is a brown leather sweatband with 'Lt Colonel W. Martin' handwritten in ink. The cap is lined with silk.
Brigadier William Martin was born in Westbury, Tasmania on 21 June 1856. He was appointed to the Tasmanian Volunteer Rifle Regiment (92nd Launceston Regiment) as a second lieutenant on 2 July 1879. Martin was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1881 and promoted to captain with B Company, Launceston Rifle Regiment on 26 July 1883. Rising through the ranks to lieutenant colonel in 1897 Martin became Officer Commanding, Tasmanian Infantry Regiment on 5 March 1903 and Officer Commanding Tasmanian Field Force on 1 January 1907. He was Aide de Camp to the Governor General from 1 January 1912, General Officer Commanding 23 Brigade from 1 July 1916, Tasmanian Censor from 1 October 1916 and Officer Commanding Mona Vale Camp from 22 September 1918. Martin moved to the Retired List on 1 October 1919 and was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal and the Volunteer Officers' Decoration. He died on 11 July 1938.
