Delville Wood
Description
Right leaf of a double page sketch of Delville Wood, depicted here ravaged by the war. Situated in the Somme region, it is adjacent to the small village of Longueval and was the scene of intense fighting during the First World War, particularly during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Benson notes that the 12th Brigade came through the area on 6th March to the 12th Brigade Headquarters. The landscape was full of boots, bones and South Africans. He says, "The whole district makes one sick with misery. It's filthy."
