Artificial poppy : Lest We Forget 1949
Description
Artificial red poppy made from two circles of deep pink cotton glued together. Black paint has been applied to the centre and the stem, formed from a length of wire, has a bunch of black thread (representing the stamens) attached to it with a twist of copper wire inserted through the centre of the poppy. A green paper tag glued to the reverse of the poppy is labelled 'Lest we Forget - Poppy - 1949 Copyright' in white.
History / Summary
Artificial cotton fundraising poppy made for sale on Armistice Day - also known as Poppy Day - in 1949, and sold for one shilling each, or 3d for a child's version. These prices had remained the same since the inception of Poppy Day. This example was purchased in South Australia.
