Studio portrait of NX34248 Sergeant (Sgt) Phillip Charles Murray, 2/20 Battalion, of Dulwich Hill, NSW. Sergeant Murray enlisted in June 1940. After training in Australia the 2/20th embarked for Singapore on 2 February 1941. They underwent further training in Malaya and prepared defensive positions against the increasing likelihood of a Japanese invasion of Singapore. The invasion began on 8 February 1942 and Sgt Murray is presumed to have been killed in action on 10 February 1942. He was 36 years of age. Sgt Murray's brother, NX69389 Sgt Donald Arthur Murray served in the 2/3 Motor Ambulance Convoy and died in Borneo as a prisoner of war on 25 March 1945.
