Description
Depicts the famed cartoon characters 'Bluey and Curley' from the series designed and created by Alex Gurney in 1943. During the Second World War, Bluey and Curley were synonymous with the male larrikin and conveyed through humour, an Australian war experience. Themes that Gurney would continue to explore. This sculpture, created in 1944, is a tribute to the success of the comic strip and to the value placed on the mateship and loyalty between the would-be heroes. In a very turbulent time in Australia's history, Bowles' sculpture reinforces many of the characteristics that made 'Bluey and Curley' an enduring part of Australian social culture.
