Studio portrait of 7442 Private (Pte) Walter Brunton Brownlee, 3rd Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. Pte Brownlee was originally from Liberton, Edinburgh, Scotland. He had been keen to join the army or navy as a teenager in Scotland, but was considered not tall enough or old enough. He migrated to Australia in 1914, settling firstly in Armidale, NSW. A dairyman in civilian life, Brownlee enlisted on 3 May 1917. His height was five feet, making him one of the shortest soldiers in the AIF. Pte Brownlee embarked with the 25th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Euripides on 31 October 1917. He died of wounds in France, on 20 June 1918, aged 20.
