Collection relating to the Second World War service of 416987 Flight Sergeant William Raymond Owen, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Australia, 1941-1945.

Wallet 1 of 2 – Consists of two log books of Flight Sergeant Owen.

Folder 1 of 2 contains one Flying Log Book of Flight Sergeant Owen, with entries dated between 30 March 1942 and 21 April 1944. It covers Flight Sergeant Owen’s period of pilot training at 11 Elementary Flying Training School in Benalla, Victoria, 7 Service Flying Training School at Deniliquin, New South Wales, and Central Flying School at Tamworth, New South Wales. This log book records details such as dates and times of flights, aircraft types and numbers, pilots, and purposes of flights. It also includes certificates for completed courses, a letter from the RAAF Recruiting Centre, training notes, and photographs of aircraft cockpits.

Folder 2 of 2 contains one Link Trainer Instructor’s Instructional and Flying Log Book of Flight Sergeant Owen, with entries dated between 1 August and 31 October [c 1944]. This log book records practice flights that Flight Sergeant Owen made in a Link trainer while an instructor at 6 Service Flying Training School at Mallala, South Australia. It includes details such as dates and times of practice flights, names of pupils, and types of exercises attempted. This log book also includes one loose page of training notes.

History / Summary

Flight Sergeant William Raymond Owen enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 8 November 1941. He completed elementary flying training and service flying training in Australia, and went on to become a Link Trainer instructor at No. 6 Service Flying Training School at Mallala, South Australia. Flight Sergeant Owen was discharged on 14 November 1945, upon demobilisation.
