Collection relating to the Second World War service of 431226 Pilot Officer Alan Hamilton Lewis, Royal Australian Air Force, Canada, 1943-1944.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of two letters from Pilot Officer Lewis to his sister, Miss Helene Lewis, dated 16 November 1943 and 24 April 1944. The letters were written while Pilot Officer Lewis was undergoing pilot training in Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme, and Miss Lewis was serving in the Australian Women’s Army Service. In his letters to his sister, whom he addresses as 'Dumps', Pilot Officer Lewis writes about the cold weather, being caught gambling, his train journey to the air force station, training, good food, receiving mail from home, travelling to America while on leave, being involved in a car accident, and getting his commission.

History / Summary

Alan Hamilton Lewis enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 9 June 1943, after previously serving in the Citizen Military Force and the Second Australian Imperial Force. He trained as a pilot in Australia and Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme, and went on to serve with 189 Squadron, based in the United Kingdom. At the time of his discharge on 25 October 1945, Lewis held the rank of flying officer.
