On leave
Description
'On leave' depicts an off-duty naval officer walking along a footpath of urban Sydney at night time. Standing nearby in the open doorway of a two story house is a woman wearing a white dress, casually posed. Cant, through the compositional devices of a dark street at night, moody lighting and distinct lack of people, easily shows this is a house of ill-repute and the sailor is willingly about to be propositioned by the woman in front of it. As a social realist, Cant is prepared to depict the seedier side of war time Sydney.
