HMAS San Michele (54) at anchor. This ship was a converted seine net trawler based in Townsville. It patrolled harbour approaches against attack by Japanese submarines while convoys were forming. There were two other ships based at Townsville; HMAS John Hardy and HMAS Faye C. The ships were fitted with a fixed non-retractable ASDIC set, and armed with a few depth charges and an Oerlikon gun. The San Michele later worked in the Bougainville area. This image is from the collection of Lieutenant Paul Merrick (Mick) Dexter, who enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANV) in 1943, and was a watchkeeper and anti-submarine specialist on Corvettes between 1944 and 1946. He continued to serve in the RANV after the Second World War, resigning his commission in 1964.
