Description

Informal portrait of Fumika Clifford and her husband 22682 Private (Pte) John Kenneth Clifford, British Commonwealth Forces Korea (BCFK) with two unidentified BCFK servicemen and a Japanese woman. A huge stone torii (traditional gate) is in the background. Miyajima is located on Itsuku-shima (Sacred Island) which is situated in the Inland Sea, south west of Hiroshima. Torii are commonly found at the entry to shrines and temples. Pte Clifford had served in the Second World War (service number NX206168) prior to his posting to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan where he met Fumika in 1947. From 28 December 1950 until 8 January 1951when he was wounded, Pte Clifford served in the Korean War with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). He returned to Japan and in October 1952 he and Fumika married. In 1953 Pte Clifford was posted back to Australia. Fumika and their young daughter Mary sailed to Australia later in 1953 on the New Australia with other war brides and children. Despite their marriage, the Australian Government initially restricted the period of Fumika's residency to five years. Mary was not named on any official documents and was included on Fumika's passport photograph (see P08339.003). A second daughter, Julia, was born in Australia.
