Studio portrait of 2707 (later 2707A) Private Thomas John Kinchington (also known as Jack Thomas Neugent), 49th Battalion of Brisbane, Qld. A steward prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. He was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium on 26 September 1917, aged 24. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Pte Thomas Kinchinton was one of 5 brothers who served during the war. He is the brother of 2875B Pte Robert Emmett Kinchington, who died of influenza on 5 February 1919 in Ireland, Lieutenant Patrick Kinchington, MM, 6823 Pte Vincent Kinchington and 986 Corporal James Timothy Conmee, MM.
