Studio portrait of 7609 Private David Ernest Wolff (known as David Wolff), 1st (later 13th) Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Marathon (A74) on 10 May 1917. He was killed in action, on 4 July 1918, near Hamel, France, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. Pte Wolff's brother, 3506 Sergeant Arthur Carlson Wolff (P08624.318), was killed in action on 3 May 1918.
