Studio portrait of 122 Private John Richard Murray, 34th Battalion of Vary via Paterson, NSW. A farmer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 2 May 1916. He was wounded in action on 1 October 1917 during fighting near Zonnebeke, Belgium. He died of his wounds in the 9th General Hospital, Rouen, France, aged 23. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
