Studio portrait of 501 Private Stanley James (alias Frederick Edward Hinks James), 6th Battalion ...
Studio portrait of 501 Private Stanley James (alias Frederick Edward Hinks James), 6th Battalion of Richmond, Victoria. The photograph is mounted in a booklet which has a cut out newspaper clipping announcing his death on 27 April 1915 pasted on the back. A card commemorating what would have been his 21st birthday on 5 May 1916 is also tucked into the booklet. An iron moulder prior to his enlistment, he embarked on 19 October 1914 aboard HMAT Hororata (A20). The battalion was raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914 and embarked just two months later. After a brief stop in Albany, Western Australia, the battalion proceeded to Egypt, arriving on 2 December. It later took part in the Anzac landing on 25 April 1915, as part of the second wave.
