Description
Outdoor portrait of Betty Ford, aged 18 years. Betty met NX173211 (N229183) Gunner (Gnr) John Henry Ware Wiseman, 4th Field Regiment, at a Saturday night dance in Newcastle. John was soon posted but they continued their courtship by mail, writing of marriage and children in their letters. In 1945, John was wounded in New Guinea and when a doctor advised him against marriage, John felt their future had been destroyed. After a long delay, he wrote Betty a frank and emotional letter ending their relationship. Despite her loss, Betty made a life for herself. She married and had four children. Betty saw John only once more, soon after the birth of her first child.
