Description
Studio portrait of 407655 Flying Officer (FO) Colin James Twist, 11 Squadron, RAAF, of Perth, WA. Enlisting in Adelaide on 7 December 1940, FO Twist was serving as a Wireless Air Gunner aboard Catalina A24-43 when it crashed on the Solomon Islands whilst dropping stores on the night of 26 April 1943. The aircraft was initially reported missing, however in February 1944, its wreckage was discovered by members of the RAAF and the remains of three airmen, not including FO Twist, were identified and buried. Later investigations revealed that FO Twist was taken prisoner by the Japanese and later died or was killed by his captors on 7 August 1943 in or near Buin. His name is commemorated on the Port Moresby Memorial, Papua New Guinea.
